Yet another road accident has taken place on the roads of out small island. It is heary breaking, when one reads the news, of some accidents or fatality. One certainly understands the anger, send of disbelief, and the need to protest against this continued occurrences.

On a regular basis we are facing the brutality on these accidents, hoping that we can one day see as stop to these tragic episodes, where in many cases it is innocent and responsible parties that have to pay the heavy price.

At each accident we hear of we try to reconstruct the dynamics of the accident and we ask ourselves many questions:

SAFER DRIVING COURSE

In September 2020 the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution called “Improving Global Road Safety”, which has the main aim of avoiding and cutting back on no less than 50% of the fatalities and injuries caused by road accidents. . This is a target set to be reached by 2030.

The World Health Organisation developed a Global Plan by Ottobre 2021. This plan identified four fundamental pillars, required, to reach the objection set out by the United Nations. The European Union accepted this document, known as the  EU Road Safety Policy Framework 2021-2030 – Next steps towards “Vision Zero”.

We are not the only ones who think that to prevent road accidents from happening it is necessary to raise awareness among the population, both young people and adults, who must be directed to a responsible approach through safe driving courses

Continuing in reading this article we will discover why an attentive parent, or an enlightened teacher, must promote a culture of road safety through training initiatives aimed at children.

A safe driving course has the ability to convey to students the importance of protecting themselves, the occupants of the vehicle, and finally all those who may be within its range of action: cyclists, pedestrians, animals, motorcyclists, road hauliers, and of course…motorists.

Making our roads safer is everyone’s duty, and taking a safe driving course is the most immediate way to protect ourselves and the people we love from the misfortune of a road accident, both as an active and as a passive part .

Civil society is called to act by carrying out an act of love towards their loved ones and towards our territory. Let’s see how:

– Taking part in a safe driving course.

– Giving a course to the people you love.

– Organizing meetings and seminars in secondary schools or universities.

– Promoting moments of aggregation and reflection on an important topic for both young people and adults.

The Cause of Accidents: The view of the Institutions

The European Parliament approved a resolution in 2021 where it emerges that:

Alcohol is involved in about 25% of all road deaths, while drugs are involved in 15% of cases.

Speeding is a key factor in around 30 % of fatal road crashes and an aggravating factor in most crashes.

Every year, 10 million serious traffic offenses committed by non-residents related to speeding, failure to stop at red lights and drink driving are detected in the EU.

Using a mobile phone or other electronic device while driving a car or motorcycle significantly impairs driving ability and is responsible for 10-30% of road accidents.

In this resolution, the European Parliament called on the states of the European Union and the European Commission to:

“…develop key performance indicators relating to road safety and mobility education in the Member States, and to develop EU tools to design, implement and evaluate such education;

encourages all Member States to ensure quality road safety education, which should start at school and be part of lifelong learning…”.

The theory of the four pillars

The Global Plan adopted by the OMS and the United Nations is called “Safe System Approach” and has four main pillars in its strategy to curb road accidents:

Safer Road Infrastructure

Safer Vehicles
